There are several different causes of power lock failure. The most common problems are faulty switches, worn actuators and damaged latch assemblies. Some less common problems are blown fuses, damaged wiring or a defective body control module.
Lock Switch:
If all your power locks suddenly stop working, it's most likely because of a faulty lock switch or blown fuse. It's also possible there is a short in the wiring harness.
Lock Actuators:
If the power lock for a single door is problematic, the lock actuator is probably worn out. A lock actuator consists of a small motor, gears and an extendable mechanism connected to the door latch. With an individual lock actuator in every door, these electronically controlled actuators are responsible for locking and unlocking each door whenever the lock switch is pressed.
A faulty power door lock actuator may produce a few noticeable symptoms. You may notice that one of your power door locks is unusually slow or it only works sometimes. In some cases, it might lock but won’t unlock.
Body Control Module:
In some vehicles, the door lock switch directly powers the lock actuator within each door to lock or unlock all the doors. In other vehicles with more complex power lock systems, a body control module provides further control of functionality in locking and unlocking. The body control module is a dedicated computer, programmed to manage various different electronic functions within a vehicle.
