When power window regulators fail, the window

may come off track and slide down.

The most common problems result from a broken window regulator (ie: window track), seized window motor, busted cable pulley or faulty window switch. And while uncommon, sometimes there is a combination of problems.

In some cases, power window issues are intermittent. Your window might stop working temporarily and then start working again for awhile. But these intermittent issues typically get worse with time, to the point where it permanently stops working. If your power window works intermittently, you may have a faulty window switch.

If your power window is operating slower than normal, it's most likely because the window motor is failing. It will typically get slower and eventually seize completely. A slow window will also occur if the glass is binding within the rubber window channels.

It's usually necessary to remove the door panel for power window repair.

With a broken window regulator, you might actually hear a crunching or grinding type of noise while pressing the window switch. Most auto manufacturers are now using cable operated regulators. This modern window regulator design is light and cheap to produce, but it's more fragile than traditional window regulators. Most window regulators are not repairable and thus require the entire assembly be replaced.

With cable window regulators, the window motor pulls a wire cable along the track. A series of plastic pulleys are designed to keep the cable on track. The cables are attached to a bracket plate, which mounts to the door glass. The glass and attached bracket slide along the regulator track during operation.  Broken cables and damaged pulleys are common problems with this type of regulator.
